The Pitcairn Islands, formally the Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie, and Oeno Islands, are a collection of four volcanic islands in the southern Pacific Ocean that compose the Pacific Ocean's single British Overseas Territory. The four islands—Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie, and Oeno—are separated by hundreds of miles of water and cover an area of around 18 square miles (47 km2). Henderson Island covers 86% of the total land area, however only Pitcairn Island is inhabited. Mangareva (of French Polynesia) lies to the west and Easter Island is to the east of the Pitcairn Islands.
Pitcairn is the world's least populated national jurisdiction. The Pitcairn Islanders are a mixed ethnic group derived mostly from nine Bounty mutineers and a handful of Tahitian consorts, as seen by several of the islanders' surnames. Many books and films have been written on the revolt and its aftermath. The area has just 47 permanent residents as of January 2020.
